CANADA POWERLIFTING awards

Each year CANPL presents the following awards:

  • the Powerlifter of the Year for Male and Female

  • Bencher of the Year for Male and Female (as of 2002)

  • Hall of Fame (not necessarily presented every year)

  • The Bill Jamison Award (not necessarily presented every year)

*Prior to 2025 the awards were called CPU(Canadian Powerlifting Union) Awards

Athlete of the Year awards shall be presented to the Registrant(s) in recognition of their excellence and achievements on the platform in the three-lift powerlifting or bench-press category from the preceding year. Only athletic accomplishments are to be considered for this award.

These awards will not necessarily be presented each year if no suitable candidate can be chosen.

Hall of Fame inductees are Registrants who have made significant and noteworthy contributions to CANPL, primarily through their lifetime lifting achievements at the national and international level, and served as a role model to other Registrants. Nominees must have been an active Registrant for a minimum of 10 years. This award will not necessarily be presented each year, if no suitable candidate can be chosen. Recipients may only receive this award one time.

The Bill Jamison Award, named for our founder, is considered our highest honour.  This award shall be presented to the Registrant who best exhibits sportsmanship, perseverance, and dedication to the sport of powerlifting. The recipient must have also made a historically significant contribution to the growth of CANPL. Nominees must have been an active Registrant for a minimum of 15 years. This award will not necessarily be presented each year, if no suitable candidate can be chosen. Recipients may only receive this award one time.

For too many years, the only recognition these persons have received was when their names were called out at the annual Awards banquet, after the nationals. Because of this, we have created this page to list past winners, so a more visible and permanent record is kept.

Sadly, the names were not saved from many years. If your name should be listed on one of these pages, or you know whose name should be for any given year, please advise the webmaster.
